If you will be starting your first semester at the University of Kentucky this year, congrats! The University has maintained a tradition of providing high-caliber educational programs for Lexington students since its founding in 1865. New students that are looking for opportunities to meet people and become familiar with the University and its campus should attend a few of the most popular University of Kentucky events that are held each year. Reveling in the traditions of these events is a great way to have fun, meet new people, and start becoming comfortable in the college atmosphere. Check out a few of the top recurring events for the university and don’t forget to mark your calendar.

Dance the Night Away

Most college students enjoy going out on the town for a night of dancing and fun. Why not turn one of your social nights into an evening that benefits an important cause? Each year, the university is proud to host DanceBlue, a charitable dance marathon that benefits For the Kids. For the Kids supports children and families that are fighting childhood cancer. The annual event has proudly raised more than $8 million since its inception in 2006, and the event organizers are happy to continue holding the event so that University of Kentucky students can dance for a good cause every year. Visit the website for more information on this important event.

Service to the Community

University students have the opportunity of a lifetime to pursue their higher education goals in order to transition into their chosen professions. During your academic career, it is very helpful to budget some time on a regular basis to complete service projects for the Lexington community at large. After all, the university probably would not be here without the community’s support! One great way to make sure you get some service time in each year is to participate in the annual Fusion event, the university’s biggest day set aside for service to the community. Hosted by the Center for Community Outreach, Fusion is the best opportunity out of all the available University of Kentucky events for supporting a variety of important causes for the Lexington community.

Every university has its own set of traditions and customs that are steeped in its own history, and the University of Kentucky is no exception. The biggest tradition at the University is certainly its annual Homecoming celebration. Homecoming is a special time for university students, as it is the biggest event of the year that acknowledges the relationship between the student body and the university’s alumni. The best part is, you can happily participate in this special event annually for years to come once you become an alumnus! You may also join the Homecoming Coalition if you are interested in helping to plan the event.

It’s easy for new University of Kentucky students to become involved with the school’s community by participating in its many annual events. Which events will be receiving a spot on your calendar?
